The city of Merefa joined the contest

The geography of the competition, organized by the Foundation, is expanding: senior pupils of Merefa have joined the essay contest "I am a deputy of a local council". The children submitted to the jury about three hundred works. Today, the authors of the best works were awarded prizes from The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region.

This year's holiday of the last bell in Merefa is special: a new item was added to the program of traditional school celebration - awarding of the winners of the essay contest. Prize-winners were celebrated at every school in the city, and a total of 21 students were recognized. The children who took the first places in their educational institutions received Power Bank batteries from the contest organizers. For the second places, schoolchildren were given flash drives with 16 GB of memory, and for the third - headphones. The winners were given the awards by activists of the public organization "Merefyanska Alternatyva", under the initiative of which the contest was held in Merefa.

"The theme of this competition seemed very interesting and topical to us, therefore we asked The Fund to conduct it in our city as well. We must encourage young people to participate in public life, give children an opportunity to express their thoughts, to feel capable of changing something for the better," - says head of the NGO "Merefyanska Alternatyva”, Nataliya Ryabukha.

Participants of the competition were pupils from 9 to 11 grades of comprehensive schools of Merefa. The children wrote almost three hundred works that the jury evaluated according to the following criteria: logic, originality, and realism. In their works, pupils expressed a lot of interesting ideas about how to make Merefa a developed and comfortable city for living.

"It is necessary to restrict the movement of trucks within residential neighborhoods and improve the state of our roads. It would not hurt to plant trees and shrubs along the streets too. With the current weather conditions it is necessary either to plant some trees, or to make at least one fountain, so that it is not so hot in summer," - says Mariya Zvereva, pupil of Merefa school #6.

"I would like to suggest at the next session of the city council such ideas for improving the city. Firstly, to clean the coastal strip of the Mzha River, to make a nice-looking beach and equip it with booths for changing clothes, to set a net for volleyball and other beach games, to install a rescue tower where lifeguards will hold watch. Secondly, it is necessary to install eco-toilets throughout the city in sufficient quantities (especially in the central part of the city and, for the summertime - on the beach). Thirdly, to plant and equip a large city park for local residents to rest," - suggests pupil of the Merefa Medical Lyceum, Kateryna Strelchenko.

"More attention should be paid to patriotic education of youth and to organization of cultural programs. Few will go to Kharkiv to watch a movie or to visit an exhibition. So why not arrange our own exhibitions of paintings or hand-made crafts? It is important for people to see that someone needs them and someone is interested in their opinions," - says Maya Gulienko, pupil at Utkivka school.

The Fund promises to summarize all the wishes and suggestions of the schoolchildren and submit them to deputies of Merefa City Council.
