The village church received the funds to repair its roof
Residents of the village of Stara Vodolaga of Novovodolazkyi district are collecting money for the renovation of the local Sviato-Pokrovskyi church. The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region has supported the initiative of the faithful and made a contribution to the fund for repairing the church roof.
During its 340-year history, the Sviato-Pokrovskyi church in the village of Stara Vodolaga has disappeared off the face of the earth three times and was rebuilt again and again. The first two iterations were wooden and burned down, and the same sad fate was met by the stone church built at the beginning of the 19th century - it was blown up during the Second World War, and after the war its remains were used as construction materials. For more than fifty years the village has lived without a church, until a local couple with the charactonym surname "Dobriak" (good-hearted) - Matrona Ivanivna and Ivan Semenovych - has purchased with their own funds the building of a former collective farm dining room. It was this building that under the initiative of the faithful, was transformed into the Sviato-Pokrovskyi church, where services have now been conducted since 2005. People have decorated the premises on their own the best they could, which is still not enough - the building needs expensive capital repairs.
"Currently we are collecting money to change the roof - it is old, covered in moss, and has some leakages. This is the most problematic part of the church at the moment. And in general, it is necessary to insulate the building, because it is cold inside the church, we need to do interior repairs – so we are far from ecclesiastical splendor, - says the prior of the church, Father Dymytrii. - Repairing the roof costs more than one hundred thousand hryvnias, and we have collected only 55 thousand yet: 30 thousand gave us The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region and 25 thousand - a local agricultural enterprise. We are very thankful to them, as I have tried to raise funds before, but nothing came out of it."
"For any village its church is its heart. It is a place where people gather on holidays, where they come for advice in difficult times. It is very important that rural churches do not fall into ruin, and continue to spiritually support villagers," - says Valerii Dema, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region.
Previously, a dome for the Sviato-Pokrovskyi church was made, funded by donations, and the faithful have made bells by themselves - from oxygen cylinders. They have cropped the bottoms, painted them, hung them in place - and a DYI bell tower was finished. Of course it might look odd, but what is important is that after decades of silence there is euphonious church bell ringing over Stara Vodolaga again.
