Valerii Dema: Children are our priority
For the third consecutive year the charitable program "Complex educational and cultural development for children in Kharkiv region" is operating. During this time, dozens of educational institutions and thousands of children from all over Slobozhanshchyna took part in the program. Valerii Dema, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region, tells about the implementation of the program this year.
-Valerii Ivanovych, what has been managed to get done in the framework of the "children" program in the last five months?
- This year for the first time we held among schoolchildren of Kharkiv region an educational conference on the subject of local self-governance. Senior pupils were invited to write an essay on what changes they would introduce to their community, were they deputy of local council. The result was pleasantly impressive: the children showed remarkable innovation skills, demonstrated their willingness to do something useful for their village, city, district.
At the same time, The Fund continues to support rural schools, kindergartens, libraries for children. We buy didactic materials, toys, literature, sports equipment for these establishments, help with repairs, furniture purchasing, etc. Work in this direction is ongoing.
-Are there any other projects for children planned?
- So, we have already begun preparations for the new season in the children's camp "Barvinok", which is located in Barvinkivskyi district of Kharkiv region. Last year, The Fund has actively participated in organizing a summer holiday for children, and this experience was very positive. Thanks to The Charitable Foundation of Social Development of Kharkiv Region and our partners from Dar Foundation, about 200 children from rural areas of Slobozhanshchyna have enjoyed summer recreation. These were the children from large families, children of ATO soldiers, and gifted pupils. So, this summer we will continue to take care of the camp and its visitors. The Fund has already allocated funds for the ongoing repair of buildings and technical facilities, for purchasing paint for outdoors playgrounds and sports grounds, benches, and fences. It is also planned to install additional toilets, to repair the water supply, to partially replace the lighting. We will ensure that children may live in comfortable conditions that meet all sanitary norms and safety requirements.
-Will the partnership between The Fund and the camp be limited to repairs or will there be anything else?
-There will be an interesting educational-entertaining program for children. We plan to organize educational excursions, meetings with successful people, master classes in English, acting, decorative art, and more. Traditionally, a camp newspaper will be being issued. We also plan to involve students from The Ukrainian Academy of Leadership to work with the children. They will share with the kids of the camp some unique skills and knowledge, will help to develop leadership abilities, and belief in their strength. As Immanuel Kant said that in education there lies a great mystery of perfection of human nature – so will we pay special attention to the upbringing of children.
